What Does a Roof Surveyor Do, and When Might You Need One?

As a roof surveyor, I’m often called out to inspect all kinds of roofing issues – from leaking flat roofs to pitched roofs that may be coming to the end of their lifespan. On average, I carry out around 30 to 40 roof inspections per month. These inspections are usually followed by a written report, which may help support insurance claims, identify defects, or assist with general roof maintenance planning.

Why You Might Need a Roof Surveyor

Many customers contact me when they’re unsure about the condition of their roof. This may be due to a recent leak, signs of damp, or simply because they want peace of mind before purchasing a property or renewing their insurance.

In some cases, a standard inspection and report will provide all the information needed. However, there are occasions where further support is required – particularly if the roof has been installed incorrectly or if the repairs are not straightforward.

Beyond the Inspection: Roof Consultancy Services

If a problem is identified, the next step is to understand the available options. This is where I can assist further as a roof surveyor offering consultancy services. Even if I haven’t carried out the original inspection, I can work with photos, drawings, and notes to assess the situation and give general advice on:

  • What the problem may be

  • How it might be rectified

  • Possible repair methods

  • Estimated cost ranges for each option

This process may take anywhere from one to three hours, depending on the complexity of the issue. The goal is to ensure you have enough information to make an informed decision on how to move forward.

How to Arrange a Roof Survey

If you think you may need a roof surveyor, or if you’ve already had a report but still feel unsure, feel free to get in touch. I’ll ask for as much information as you can provide (photos, a brief description, etc.) and let you know the next steps.
